Thank you so much Prison Arts Coalition. My heart stirs, I shed tears as I learn more and more about the humanity transforming itself through people who care; healing through arts and theater, creative writing, performances, community services, and life coaching. I am doing a power point presentation for my college class 'Auto-Biography and the Psychology of Memoir' and decided to focus on 'women in prison.' I have been reading different stories and projects... I am so deeply moved. I feel human again. Thank you Prison Arts Coalition for having such a professional and well-organized site. YOU ROCK!!
Sincerely,
Triya Smith

By Heart: Poetry, Prison & Two Lives is a remarkable memoir of two powerful personalities brought together through poetry and prison. Neither person thought they would end up at San Quentin and yet when they did their joint contribution to the work in prison and beyond was phenomenal. It is an amazing read, turning from chapter to chapter you learn about their lives as children, young adults, and independent and confined individuals as well as their thoughts, beliefs and hopes. If you have worked in prison, you will find it heartwarming to learn what your presence means to those who reside there. And if you ever questioned (as we all do) does my work really matter, you will no longer wonder. Through Judith’s genuineness a poet awoke and found a way to live a fuller life in spite of confinement and through Spoon’s honesty and talent many people will be compelled to contribute to society even if society has abandoned them.

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a manuscript copy of this work and am already planning on having Judith visit for a book talk at York Correctional Institution for Women in Niantic, Connecticut. Actually, we are planning to have her do book talks at each of the prison book clubs in our prisons. I encourage everyone to find a way to have Judith share her story and Spoon’s story with your students, colleagues and friends.

Thanks Judith and Spoon!!

EX-CONS ONLY NEED AUDITION

The Poetic Justice Project will begin auditions for their upcoming play Blue Train beginning Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009. The play, created and performed at the California Men’s Colony in 2003, will feature men who have been previously incarcerated in jail or prison. No professional acting experience is required.

Auditions will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Poetic Justice Project, 1241 Garden Street in San Luis Obispo. Blue Train auditions are part of the Poetic Justice Project’s Open House, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sept. 19, and will be observed by members of the public. Rehearsals for the play begin Nov. 9. Blue Train will be performed at the San Luis Obispo Little Theatre on Dec. 26 and 27, following a VIP preview performance on Dec. 22.

The Poetic Justice Project creates original theatre that examines crime, punishment and redemption, producing groundbreaking work that challenges and transforms our culture. It is a program of the William James Association, which has provided prison arts programs in California and other parts of the U.S. since 1977.

The Poetic Justice Project’s Artistic Director, Deborah Tobola, managed the Arts in Corrections program at the California Men’s Colony from 2000 to 2008. Under Tobola’s direction, the program produced an original play annually. Five men who participated in the prison production of the play in 2003 are working with her to bring Blue Train to the public stage in December.

For more information, please call (805) 264-5463 or email: staff@poeticjusticeproject.org
